Cupcakes on Pitt

"Patty Cakes on Pitt" would have had a nicer ring to it. Far less American and evocative of a simpler time when butterfly cakes topped with cream and little wings were about as complicated as they got.

Still, there's a dose of nostalgia to be had at this tiny cafe-bakery, even if a girl with tattoos puts the piping on the cakes (not at all like the grey-haired women in floral dresses who manned the cake stalls of my childhood). There are only six seats, but this is a fine place to start the day with a well-made Single Origin Roasters coffee. Regulars drift in and out for takeaway orders and there's a lively banter behind the counter.

I could watch tattoo girl ice cupcakes all morning, but couldn't actually bring myself to eat one at 8.30am. I have had them before and the butter icing is pretty full-on. Topped with bits of Crunchie or Jaffas or looking like lemon meringue pies, they're not really a breakfast cupcake. They're beautiful to look at, however.

The savoury muffins and one with strawberries are better suited to breakfast. At lunch there are wraps, salads and soups. And there are more cupcakes - tiramisu, vanilla, peppermint, passionfruit, $3.50 each or six for $19. And by lunchtime there are queues to buy them as well.
